New York Edition

‘Poems, chiefly in the Scottish Dialect’ by Robert Burns

Published by J.& A. MacLean, Franklin’s Head, NY in 1788.

This is the 2nd American edition.  J. and A. MacLean were natives of Glasgow who went to America in 1783.  The New York edition apparently sold poorly and in 1799 there were still unsold sheets of this edition.

This copy has an engraved frontispiece of Burns which was probably copied from the 1787 Edinburgh portrait with the result that the poet looks inwards, the opposite of the Edinburgh likeness.

This copy is from The John Cowie Collection.
