Philadelphia Edition

‘Poems, chiefly in the Scottish Dialect’ by Robert Burns

Published by P.Stewart & G. Hyde in Philadelphia on 7th July 1788.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, the United States of America did not recognize copyright for books published in other countries so American publishers had no difficulty in printing editions of Burns’s work, particularly after the success of the Kilmarnock and Edinburgh editions.

The earliest American editions were printed without the poet's knowledge and he did not benefit from their sale.

This was the first American edition and since this book is now extremely rare, it can be presumed that the printing run must have been a short one.

This copy is from The John Cowie Collection.
